“We can’t live without Rosh Chodesh Live. It brings us all together in a way that nothing else can...I saw everyone dancing and singing while Rabbi David played guitar and sang and Rabbi Creditor sang and told us stories about Rabbi Rebecca. Even though I don’t personally always dance and sing and go crazy, I felt so connected to everyone in that moment. I thought to myself, ‘This is what I’m going to miss next year.’”
Marina Goodwin, South Area Solomon Schechter class of 2005

Since 2003, Shirav has been priveleged to share a unique musical and learning experience with the children and faculty of the South Area Solomon Schechter Day School in Stoughton, Massachusetts on each Rosh Chodesh of the school year.

Known as Rosh Chodesh Live, Menachem and David created a special arrangement of highlights of the Hallel service using traditional tunes and original melodies.

Each month, Rosh Chodesh Live begins with a story presented by Menachem or David which ties into the month we are entering and the holidays we celebrate in that month. And then the singing and dancing begins.

“When I came into school today, I heard children in the stairwell saying: “It is Rosh Hodesh Live today? Awesome!” Thank you as always for the wonderful ruah. You are part of what makes this school such a happy place.

And now I finally understand that midrash about the beit mikdash expanding at aleinu. Grandparents in the back, big teenagers on the side, a whole school of children in the middle, no place to sit or stand -- but plenty of room to dance. That is how it must have been and that is how it is by us.”
